We were in a cafe discussing the plot for our next production. And for some reason I mentioned that a TV celeb once said that her husband is jealous of her best friend because she tells him everything (the friend, not the husband, that's why husband jealous).

One of us commented, "What to do? She is a fag hag...that Goh lady also a fag hag, else why you think her hubby so gay-friendly" (Goh lady being the one more commonly referred to as the Peanut lady in most forums)

I was totally disconcerted. Does he consider me a fag hag too? I am gay-friendly. Of course I have to be, else I won't be sitting at the same table with him. What business does a gay have to call anyone a fag hag?

Everyone in the theatre circle has to be gay-friendly...you can count with your fingers the number of non-gay males in theatre. Does that make all females in theatre fag hags?

There's these gays screaming for equal rights and non-discrimination. Then when we get friendly with them, we get called fag hags...by one of them, no less...

Oh yes, did I mentioned that some years ago I realised a gay friend discriminates against transvestites? Maybe now he has grown up and knows better. But it is astonishing that a person who has suffered discrimination at the hands of others doesn't learn not to do the same to others who, like him, have chosen alternative lifestyles.

Do naught unto others what you would not want done onto you.

The mysterious August Production

I believe the last blog, before I disappeared, mentioned an Aug Production..a play written by Seah.

I was one of the producer of that production. Yes, it was one of the "new and exciting things" that happened to me during my absence from this blog. The play is called "Snakes and Lovers" directed by Ka-Y and performed by Leelian, Weijun, Garrick, Jo, Cat, Qinzhi and Peishan.

It has ended like half a month ago, everyone's happy and gone home to rest and the producers still have admin work to do...damned!

It almost got called "au revoir" something or the other. The publicity manager was aghast...how to publicise if more than half of Singapore population dunno how to pronounce the play title, let alone spell it...

Luckily in the end we decide that the English title should remain in English...

These past weeks, we have been eagerly waiting for reviews to appear...
Only got 1 review and the reviewer buay song we put subtle hint about lesbianism in the play. Said we were exploiting the gay community just to give a cheap twist to the story.

Really cannot see how a "subtle hint" can be considered "exploiting".

Come to think of it, the subject of "gays" has been appearing in every one of our play since our Taking-off Season starting with TKK and ending with SNL. Seems to have become a part of us...PM Goh had said gays are ok in his last NDP rally, right? Last year? the year before?

Guess the reviewer will be happier if we have expanded on the gay theme and lamented about the sorrows and discrimination suffered by the gays or something along that line...We probably have to do a play like that some time in the future to endear ourselves to the rest of the arts community...

But really, we never think to exploit. Gays are among us; some are our very good friends or our very helpful colleagues or our friendly neighbours.

Sure, the mainstream population still thinks gay is an evil. But there really is no need to overcompensate. We don't have to yell about the unfairness in our plays; rally about equal rights and stuff...just because we are not lobbying for gay rights, we get branded as "exploitative"

Unfairness exists everywhere. Colour of the skin; name of the worshipped deity; existence of a penis; pimple-free complexion...criteria that define how much advantage you have over others. Sexual orientation is just one of the defining criteria.

No need to wallow in self-pity.

I'm still alive lah.

When was my last blog post?
April?!
Atrocious...to be neglecting my dear readers like that...
Dun worry, I'm still very much alive in the physical world.

Has stopped writing for a while because...
erhm...a lot of new exciting things had happened to me and I wasn't quite sure if I wouldn't become delirious and start shooting off my mouth on my own blog...

Irony, isn't it? To stop writing because there was too many things happening...

Oh well, things have quiet down a bit and I'll be writing again.
