Praises for Singapore

I have forgotten what I was looking for on the internet; my search turned up an article that is full of praises for Singapore. Happened a few months back during my self-imposed exile from my blog.

The General Election had just ended a few months back (6 May to be exact) and there had been a lot of criticism about "freedom of speech" and "unlevel playing field" during the election period.

This article that praises Singapore in every single paragraph sets me thinking deep on how others can see our good side, but we are always critising and never seeing how good we already are.

It was only later that my pea-sized brain realise that Singapore shouldn't be proud of the praises. You see, the article is using Singapore as a base reference to criticize China. The title of the article is roughly translated as Chinese Communist Party, a student of Singapore that is unable to graduate within 26 years. (See original text)

Singapore, a democratic nation complete with General Elections and Presidential Elections, being compared to China, the largest communist nation. If we do not win on "freedom", "fairness", and "playing by the book", then I don't know how to define the difference between democracy and communism.

MacPherson is spelled with a capital P lah!

The one thing I can't stand is that people insist on spelling MacPherson as "Macpherson". Get this into your heads my dears, it is "MacPherson", with a capital M and a capital P.
We have signboards in the MacPherson area with "Macpherson" splash all over.

Even the opposition candidate running for the parliamentary seat of MacPherson constituency couldn't get it right in his flyers and banners. Hello mister, before you think of representing MacPherson, trying finding out how to spell the name of the constituency correctly, yeah?

Before we talk about "Speak Good English" let us try "Spell Good English".

Come to think of it, what is the opposite of "broken english"? "Good English"?

Prowling on the net

Was getting rather bored with working in the lab yesterday, so surfed the net a little. It's a wonder the things that can turn up.

That's how i stumbled upon the P65 MP website. That's also how i found many of my friends' blogs...we are a bunch of shy people who never invite people to our blogs.

Yesterday i found yet another of blog belonging to my friend. It was the title of the blog that attracted me...because it borrowed the title of a song I love.

She is not really a close friend. She's smart and cute and really nice, but we juz dun click. Kinda different wavelength, me and she. I enjoy reading her blog though, so full of life and happy thots.

Yesterday I found another of her blog. I was saddened by the things she has written on this alt-blog. I am always easily affected by the emotion of people around me...whenever a gal friend is going through a rough patch with a guy friend, i get upset and totally hostile towards the guy...yah, i always side with the gals (unless the fault lies with the gal, then i'll side with no one..heehee)

It seems she is breaking up with her hubby. I had always wondered how come she never mention him in her blog. But then again, I never mention my family in my blog too, so wat's the big deal with a missing hubby.

Am in a horrible mood ever since i read her alt-blog yesterday...

The P65 MPs doing Hip Hop?!

I was listening to Dongli883 while working late into the night in office. Just letting the news rumble on, waiting for the songs to come on again.

Suddenly, *gasp* what duh?! Did I just hear the DJ say MP performing Hip Hop in Chingay 07?!

Oh my god?! It's true!! That's Teo Ser Luck talking about it...

Not say I want to say, but these MPs arh...donno what to say them ah..My first reaction was "Oh shit, what happened?"

Went to visit their blog at http://www.p65.sg
Good try. But must try harder. Everyone write like writing official statement like dat. The best piece is by Lam Pin Min, about his childhood...interesting, at least for me who is born after the "catching spider" era...personal, which is what blogging is about.

First Hip Hop, now blogging. What next? Podcast?

mrbrown shot to stardom with his PNPP #6 (aka Bak Chor Mee Mai Di Gua) podcast...maybe the P65 can try a Mee Siam Mai Harm one and see where that leads them? Haha...

Fag Hags

fag hag Slang (disparaging and offensive).
a heterosexual female who seeks out or particularly enjoys the company of male homosexuals.

Dictionary.com Unabridged (v 1.0.1), Based on the Random House Unabridged
Dictionary, © Random House, Inc. 2006. http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=fag

We were in a cafe discussing the plot for our next production. And for some reason I mentioned that a TV celeb once said that her husband is jealous of her best friend because she tells him everything (the friend, not the husband, that's why husband jealous).

One of us commented, "What to do? She is a fag hag...that Goh lady also a fag hag, else why you think her hubby so gay-friendly" (Goh lady being the one more commonly referred to as the Peanut lady in most forums)

I was totally disconcerted. Does he consider me a fag hag too? I am gay-friendly. Of course I have to be, else I won't be sitting at the same table with him. What business does a gay have to call anyone a fag hag?

Everyone in the theatre circle has to be gay-friendly...you can count with your fingers the number of non-gay males in theatre. Does that make all females in theatre fag hags?

There's these gays screaming for equal rights and non-discrimination. Then when we get friendly with them, we get called fag hags...by one of them, no less...

Oh yes, did I mentioned that some years ago I realised a gay friend discriminates against transvestites? Maybe now he has grown up and knows better. But it is astonishing that a person who has suffered discrimination at the hands of others doesn't learn not to do the same to others who, like him, have chosen alternative lifestyles.

Do naught unto others what you would not want done onto you.

The mysterious August Production

I believe the last blog, before I disappeared, mentioned an Aug Production..a play written by Seah.

I was one of the producer of that production. Yes, it was one of the "new and exciting things" that happened to me during my absence from this blog. The play is called "Snakes and Lovers" directed by Ka-Y and performed by Leelian, Weijun, Garrick, Jo, Cat, Qinzhi and Peishan.

It has ended like half a month ago, everyone's happy and gone home to rest and the producers still have admin work to do...damned!

It almost got called "au revoir" something or the other. The publicity manager was aghast...how to publicise if more than half of Singapore population dunno how to pronounce the play title, let alone spell it...

Luckily in the end we decide that the English title should remain in English...

These past weeks, we have been eagerly waiting for reviews to appear...
Only got 1 review and the reviewer buay song we put subtle hint about lesbianism in the play. Said we were exploiting the gay community just to give a cheap twist to the story.

Really cannot see how a "subtle hint" can be considered "exploiting".

Come to think of it, the subject of "gays" has been appearing in every one of our play since our Taking-off Season starting with TKK and ending with SNL. Seems to have become a part of us...PM Goh had said gays are ok in his last NDP rally, right? Last year? the year before?

Guess the reviewer will be happier if we have expanded on the gay theme and lamented about the sorrows and discrimination suffered by the gays or something along that line...We probably have to do a play like that some time in the future to endear ourselves to the rest of the arts community...

But really, we never think to exploit. Gays are among us; some are our very good friends or our very helpful colleagues or our friendly neighbours.

Sure, the mainstream population still thinks gay is an evil. But there really is no need to overcompensate. We don't have to yell about the unfairness in our plays; rally about equal rights and stuff...just because we are not lobbying for gay rights, we get branded as "exploitative"

Unfairness exists everywhere. Colour of the skin; name of the worshipped deity; existence of a penis; pimple-free complexion...criteria that define how much advantage you have over others. Sexual orientation is just one of the defining criteria.

No need to wallow in self-pity.

I'm still alive lah.

When was my last blog post?
April?!
Atrocious...to be neglecting my dear readers like that...
Dun worry, I'm still very much alive in the physical world.

Has stopped writing for a while because...
erhm...a lot of new exciting things had happened to me and I wasn't quite sure if I wouldn't become delirious and start shooting off my mouth on my own blog...

Irony, isn't it? To stop writing because there was too many things happening...

Oh well, things have quiet down a bit and I'll be writing again.

Fined for wasted food?

Half a year ago, I promised to talked about the story of being fined in Germany for wasting food (see Yada Yada Yada...)

Seems like the story had made it to the "lifestyle" section in Zaobao some time ago.
Erh..wait, I seem to have forgotten half of it liao. Let me recap first...*surfing over to my yahoo to retrieve the email*

Hmm...can't find liao...no worries, it was a forwarded email, so it must be lying somewhere in cyberspace now...
*searching thru google.......searching 0%.....10%...58%.....100%* And we have a hit!

I shall let you read the story first...sorry, it's in Chinese. Me too lazy to translate such a long passage today....maybe I'll translate it after my Aug production....oh, have i told you about my Aug production? I believe I haven't. It written by Seah Goh. Who's Sean Goh, you must be wondering. Well, he is my friend from JC...Ah ha! Now even more blur right? Our JC got someone called Sean meh?

Yah, I also din know he is called Sean until recently. Now this production....

Erhm...ah...I kena sidetracked...opps... Before I get sidetracked again, here's the story...

Title:

So many Chinese words, got blurred yet? Okay, let you rest a bit. I'll write my "thesis" on this story later...

Jobless

Today i received news that a friend has lost his job. He is the main breadwinner of the family, his wife holds part-time jobs, has 3 young kids to feed...and he has no idea when he will find his next job.

Quite pitiful hor?

The worst part is, none of his friend (including myself) can find it in their hearts to pity him. We find it rather hilarious actually...and some of us even made fun of him...

I can actually tell the truth (about my friend's situation) and yet paint a picture that couldn't be further from the truth. And this is a lesson all of us would do well to keep in mind. A person does not have to tell lies to lie.

Why like that, you wonder.

Well...

Tomorrow, you will know why. For tomorrow he will be interviewed and he probably will make the headlines...at least in the evening papers.

Tomorrow, watch the news tomorrow...if you haven't guess who I'm talking about already...

Peacock Jungle

Link: 孔雀森林 by jht

I'm feeling very depressed today.

Partly because I got the flu (again!) and feeling groggy from medication.

But I think mostly because I've just finished a novel titled 孔雀森林. There's no peacocks and there's no jungle. And that's why I am depressed...

That's rather lame, pardon my attempt at humour. Not feeling very humorous right now.

A personality quiz; imagine you have lived in a jungle and reared 5 animals: Sheep or Goat, Bull or Cow....oh bother, this is a Chinese novel. In Mandarin sheep is goat, goat is sheep and who cares about the gender of an animal. Can't imagine why all relatives are either Aunt or Uncle, but an animal-that-goes-moo can be a cow, bull, ox, buffalo, heifer, stag, steer...they even have names for a castrated bull and from the name, you can even tell whether it was castrated as an adult or as a calf.

Okay, let's try again..

Imagine you have lived in a jungle and reared 5 animals: Sheep/Goat, Cattle, Horse, Tiger, Peacock. One day, you have to leave and take with you only 1 animal. Which will you choose?

And so the story goes about a boy who chose peacock falling in love with a girl who chose sheep, and in the process hurt a girl who chose tiger. He spent many happy hours in a pub opened by a girl who chose horse. And his good friend stubbornly insisted on choosing dog, even though he has been told for the umpteenth time that "there IS NO DOG!!"

Which would I have chosen, I wonder?

A sensitive story about growing up and as with all good stories about growing up (Like the movie "20-something Taipei"), it makes you want to cry...

We have an Award!!

In my previous entry, I mentioned that we knew we are not going to win anything in LTA2006 (Life! Theatre Award, not Land Transport Authority), and we went just for the food.

Turns out that we did win something. We got the Best Ensemble Cast. It's a 50% hit. Getting one award out of 2 nominations isn't too bad...I was so excited about attending LTA that afterwards I forgot to watch the Oscar's re-telecast when I got home..Sorry, I have small brain, can only contain a finite amount of stuff and that night, my mind is just too full of LTA.

Actually, I'm more excited about Goh Guat Kian's Best Actress award. Cos she is one of my favourite stage performer. She should have gotten this long time ago. So happy for her that she is finally recognised with an award.

And Darren Ng's Best Sound...He is really getting more and more chrismatic. I don't remember being so charmed by him when I first knew him back in 2000...He has somehow grown to become a real worth-swooning-over material. When I was watching Twisted last year, I was more capivated by him performing on his keyboard in the background (he was the sound designer and live background music performer) and I wasn't paying as much attention on the actresses and puppets on stage :P

The food at the LTA2006 reception after the award ceremony was superb, though the reception area is a bit cramp with more than half the theatre people turning up for the event. Adrian Pang was darn hilarious as the host of the ceremony; definitely even better than Billy Crystal at the Oscar's. I look forward to see him in action at next year's LTA.

P.S. If you are a fellow blogger, please help out a friend of mine at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=53431839194. Thanks a lot!
